Heartbreaking pictures for all of us who never wanted to see this day.
Town Councillor Richard Booth's opinion poll concerning a Waitrose development on the Cricket Ground is now closed, click here to see the result.
The question was:
Do you support a Waitrose supermarket on the former Cricket Ground?
Results where:
Yes, absolutely 113 (31%)
No, certainly not 190 (53%)
No, but I would like a Waitrose outside 51 (14%)

The View of the Wimborne Chamber of Trade
The Chamber of Trade believes that the reason that shops are closing in Wimborne is because people no longer come to the town to shop at the supermarket as they did, allegedly, when Safeway was the store. There may be a little in this but the overwhelming reason for the closures, particularly of food shops, is that the arrival of 'chains' like Julian Graves in the town has increased commercial rents by some 20% so that small businesses can no longer afford premises. I personally know of 3 small food businesses that would love to come to Wimborne if only they could afford to rent a shop. But evidence from all over the country, and most recently in Blandford where the town centre supermarket has closed, is that the arrival of a large supermarket in the centre of a small town does not promote small local businesses – have a look at "www.neweconomics" CLICK HERE and

Consider the proposed Wimborne situation – the car park is to be 'pay and display' run by the District Council; there will not be immediate access from the supermarket site to the town centre so ... people will drive into the town to visit the supermarket, buy an hour's parking, do their supermarket shop and depart – just as they do at Ringwood. And we are left with congested town centre roads, increased pollution and, most importantly of all, the loss of Wimborne's unique, town centre, green open space.

These two web-sites are not associated in any way with opposition to a supermarket development within the centre of Wimborne Minster. They are each concerned with the requirement made by central government to site large housing developments in this area. KWTG is complimented that the groups opposing these developments have chosen names that imitate 'Keep Wimborne Town Green' but there is no link between us other than a concern for the environment in which we live.

Tue 2 Oct, Waitrose held a 'press briefing' in The King's Head', Wimborne, in advance of submitting its Planning Application to the EDDC later this week.  The event was organised in great secrecy, Reporters did not receive their invitations until late yesterday and the Town Council was not informed or invited.
